Notes

* Note that in White's Directory of 1855 William Cole's address is given as Market Lane, where he's also shown on the 1841 census.
If you refer to the details for Drapery Row on the page for the Rookery you'll see that it's thought that Market Lane is not the same as Market Street, but is another name for Drapery Row. In Gardner's Directory of 1851 William Cole's address is actually given as Drapery Row, so this pretty much confirms that this is indeed the case.

  • According to the nameplate on its front wall the present Alma House was built in 1890, and as per the above history this would been by Henry Cole. Henry and his father William before him had been at this location since before 1861, so the present building must have replaced an older one.

  • Nameplate c.1900

    Nameplate 2014

  • Henry Cole died on 13th August 1919 and John Tott the boot maker took over the shop.

  • Many thanks to Tony Pringle for his photos of Alma House c.1900.
