  • The 'Dirty Derby' of 1844

The above extract is from the book 'In Search of Running Rein - The Amazing Fraud of the 1844 Derby'
it describes the Golden Lion at that time

Start of the 'Dirty Derby' 1844 - John Frederick Herring Sr.

Running Rein

  • Ridden by champion flat racing jockey Nat Flatman, the three-year-old Orlando finished second in the race but was awarded first place after the investigation concluded that 'Running Rein' was in reality an older and ineligible stronger four-year-old named Maccabeus.

William Cooper's stables were at the rear of the Golden Lion - this is where the first Nat Flatman started his career.

    • From details in the above planning applications it can be seen that following purchase by J D Wetherspoons in about 2000, that it was they who constructed the side extension which can be seen to right of the present-day pub frontilage. This used to be the passageway entrance to the rear of the pub - the article below describes the original use of this.

    • Many thanks to Tony Pringle for his information about the history of the pub and the photo 'The Golden Lion'.

    • Many thanks to 'Old Newmarket' for the photo 'Golden Lion c.1910'.
