Notes
- T. Dunning Chemist can be seen on the right and the Crown Inn on
the left of what is now Crown Walk in this c.1900 photo below.
The 'Crown Inn c.1900' postcard shows an artist's impression of the same view. Curiously chemist Thomas Dunning doesn't appear in any of the trade directories after 1869, but the name of the business obviously persisted.
- Frank Arthur Barrow was born in Newmarket in 1853, he was the son
of one of Newmarket's original chief veterinary surgeons; Richard
Barrow and his wife Elizabeth in March House. Frank was baptised
at St. Mary's church on 28th April 1854. Frank's mother died in 1855
and in the 1861 census his father is listed as a widower.
In 1861 Richard and his brother William Barrow were co-partners in the veterinary business at Burchley and March Houses (No.164-166 High Street) and were also farmers of 220acres of land. Over the years this business became Greenwood Ellis & Partners veterinary surgeons.
Frank never seems to have married as he's shown living with his aunt and sister on all the censuses up until 1901.
Frank died on 21st January 1937 and left his money to his solicitor and bank manager.
