Notes

  • Formerly the Black Bull.
    The rear gate at the back of the Bull yard leads to the area of the original Market Place, the site of Newmarket's Corn Market (see Chapman's map below).
    For many years the market traders stored their stalls in the Bull's yard.
    Also shown on maps of Newmarket from 1886 and 1902, at the rear of and actually adjoining the Bull was the Corn Exchange - this was still listed in the Newmarket directories of 1926 and 1936.

  • As can be seen in the 1930's photo in the Photos section below the Bull Hotel had a car repair garage at that time, with access to it through the gates on the high street. Both the 1926 and 1936 directories confirm this and the 1936 directory lists many other businesses in the Bull Hotel Yard (see above).
